I guess it's inevitable. The resignation of the Pope opens the thunderclap of the rumor mill. The vast majority of the media are searching for the reasons that the Holy Father has given for presenting his resignation. Some directly deny that the Pope told the truth. Others point out that he has not said everything. And those from beyond delve into the last years of this papacy looking for clues that will help us understand why an 85-year-old old man tells us that his physical vigor has decreased so much that, in conscience, he does not feel qualified to carry out the ministry to the that God has called you. I would like to know how many people in the world would be capable of carrying out such an exhausting task at that age. There will be those who say that there have been older popes. TRUE. Leo XIII, without going any further, died at 93 years of age. But until recently, popes spent their entire pontificate in Rome , barely leaving the Vatican. Paul VI already made trips abroad and I don't need to explain what Blessed John Paul II did. Benedict XVI, without traveling as much as his predecessor, has traveled half the world, with the particularity that he was much older than the Polish pope. In other words, the “physical” demands for a Pope of the 21st century are much higher than for one of the 19th century.
Does that mean that from now on all dads are going to retire when they look too old and tired? Well only God knows. Each one will have to do the same as Benedict has done. That is, examine his conscience before God and make the decision that they believe is best for the Church . We also enter the whirlwind of pools for the next conclave . The lists of papables that some media give is so extensive that it seems that even the prefect of the street sweepers in St. Peter's Square could be Pope. Giving broad lists has its “advantages”. There is always a greater chance that one of those who appear on Job Function Email List the “own list” will be chosen. And then you can get your chest out and score a success. I'm going to make a bet that I doubt will fail. The next Pope will emerge from among the 117 cardinal electors who will participate in the conclave. If someone asks me to make public a prediction about who I want and/or who I think is going to come out, my answer will be negative. I don't play that game . It is enough and more than enough for me to know that the chosen one will be the Vicar of Christ, Successor of Saint Peter. Do not expect many journalistic analyzes in which the idea that there is a struggle for power within the Church does not appear. The world, in the biblical sense of the term, does not understand that the papacy is above all a ministry of spiritual and ecclesial service .
Certainly the human factor is present within the Church. Throughout history we have seen popes who seemed more like worldly kings than true bishops. Even so, God never allowed those popes to touch a tittle of the deposit of faith. If the papacy has survived to this day despite all this, it is an unmistakable sign that it was instituted by Christ. The gates of Hades have not prevailed. And they will not prevail . Today the popes, although the Vatican remains an independent state - which guarantees not to depend on any other state - are what the Petrine ministry was established for. They are authentic spiritual leaders who fulfill the mandate that Jesus Christ gave to Peter: to confirm his brothers in the faith and shepherd the Lord's flock. In the peace of mind that the Church is in the hands of the One who founded it, let us spend these days confident that God will know how to provide his flock with a good shepherd, according to his heart . It is not the Holy Spirit who directly chooses the Pope. But he can help the cardinals choose the most suitable one. That should be the object of our prayers. Let us ask the Lord to enlighten the princes of the Church so that they may choose the best candidate to be the head of the apostolic college, to sit in the Chair of Saint Peter. The rest, dear brothers, is vanity of vanities. _________________ Job Function Email List |
